[ARCHIVED] Mayor Bill Cole to speak at Canyon Creek Battlefield Open House

The Friends of Canyon Creek Battlefield, the City of Billings and the Nez Per National Historical Park invite you to recognize a series of improvements at the at the Canyon Creek Battlefield Interpretive kiosk on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 10 a.m.

Billings Mayor Bill Cole and Steve Thede, Superintendent of the Nez Perce National Park, will give remarks about the history and significance of the battle to raise the profile and public awareness of the flight and its tragic conclusions.

The site is one the Nez Perce National Historical Park's 38 affiliated sites that tells part of the story of the 1,300-mile flight of Chief Joseph and his non-treaty followers. The tragic story unfolded over a five-month period from May to October 1877 as the United States Army attempted to forcibly relocate the Nez Perce from its sacred homeland in eastern Oregon onto a reservation in northern Idaho.

As another step in the preparing for the approaching 150th anniversary of the flight, the Friends of the Canyon Creek Battlefield recently installed new information signs on the approach to the historic battlefield.

In addition, the Yellowstone County Museum recently unveiled a display of the Canyon Creek Battle.
