[ARCHIVED] Billings Bypass construction update from MDT

The new section of road will connect new river crossing with upcoming railroad and Coulson Road

The following is a press release from the Montana Department of Transportation...

Construction on the Montana Department of Transportation’s (MDT) Billings Bypass project continues with the completion of the Railroad Overpass roadway section. Billings Bypass is a six-phase project that will provide a new arterial roadway.

The Railroad Overpass is the third segment of the Billings Bypass project. It is comprised of two sections: the roadway section and the overpass section. Knife River recently completed the section of roadway that will connect the river crossing with the railroad and Coulson Road overpass.

Looking toward the 2024 construction season, MDT recently contracted with Wadsworth Brothers Construction to build the overpass. This project section is anticipated to last for two construction seasons. Wadsworth Brothers Construction also constructed the Billings Bypass Yellowstone River Bridge segment in 2021 and 2022.

Once the overpass is completed, a temporary connection from Coulson Road will allow public use of the new overpass and river crossing while additional project segments are constructed.

MDT leads this project in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Yellowstone County, and City of Billings. DOWL is the lead project engineer and public information manager, and Morrison-Maierle is the bridge engineer. Wadsworth Brothers Construction is building the bridge.

Slow Down, Montana! Safe, Cautious Driving Saves Lives

Speeding and other reckless driving behaviors create unsafe conditions for you and others traveling Montana’s roads. Even if you are abiding by posted speed limits, you can still be traveling too fast for safety – particularly in inclement weather, low/no light conditions, or around emergency response or work zone sites. One simple and effective way to protect all roadway users is to lower your speed when driving a motor vehicle. In the event of a crash, the higher the speed of the vehicle(s) involved, the more deadly the collision – especially when a vulnerable roadway user is involved (pedestrian, bicyclist, motorcyclist, etc.). While driving a motor vehicle, remember to always follow posted speed limits, adjusting your speed as needed for current conditions, and keep your focus on the road ahead and the task of driving to help ensure we all reach our destinations safely.
