This plan will:
- Use public input to identify safety concerns and opportunities on routes where children walk or bike.
- Recommend safety improvement projects.
- Position schools to secure funding to make those improvements.
Why Safe Routes to School
- Within the span of one generation, the percentage of children walking or bicycling to school has dropped significantly (48% in 1969 to 13% in 2009).
- Kids are not getting enough physical activity.
- Roads near schools are congested, decreasing safety and air quality for children.
