The City of Billings has joined Nextdoor, a social platform that connects neighbors.
Through Nextdoor's Public Agencies program, the City of Billings will be able to give residents updates and alerts on things like construction delays, meetings, street closures, and more.
"The overall goal is to keep our community informed," said Victoria Hill, City of Billings public information officer.
Anyone with a Nextdoor account will be able to see city-wide updates, and the app also gives the city the ability to update specific neighborhoods.
"There are so many options for communication these days. It is our duty to reach as many people as possible with important information, and Nextdoor gives us one more opportunity to do that," Hill said.
Communication will continue through traditional channels, like social media, along with press releases to news outlets and emails.
Anyone can sign up for Nextdoor and join their neighborhood. Billings currently has more than 17,000 members.
Conversations and posts between neighborhood networks are private and cannot be seen by the City of Billings.
"This is the perfect place to ask questions and generate conversation about what's going on in your neighborhood. However, our account is not monitored 24/7, so if someone has an emergency, they should still call 911," said Hill.
